A 70 million euro, 2 year renovation project on the Mont Blanc rail service has commenced bringing changes to the timetable and travel options. The Montets tunnel is now closed until December and the trains from Chamonix to Montroc will stop in July. Trains will be replaced with a bus service but there will be a number of different alterations of the normal service. Many people have started touring off in to the back country to find better snow and adventure.  Last weekend was also the start of the Haute Route, you can embark on the adventure at any time but last weekend is when all the huts open. The Haute Route usually takes the typical ski-tourer five days to complete with the record still standing at 18 hours and 50 minutes.   (More)

An educational exhibition is in the process of being built at the Mer de Glace. The new visitor attraction will explain the creation and evolution of glaciers.  The idea came about due to the high level of interest from visitors to the Mer de Glace. The futuristic-looking visitor centre will be interactive and will feature "augmented reality" technology to give us a glimpse into the future of the glaciers. Will there be any snow in 2030? Winter 2011 / 2012 has definitely been a record breaking season on various levels; it was one of the driest starts, then we had a record snow fall since '99 and recently we have experienced a temperature difference of 40 degrees when it went from -20 to +20 in 2 weeks!
